Pippa runs Moorehaven Bed & Breakfast – the place to be for writers! Freshly baked scones provide food for thought when a murder mystery needs solving …
Introduction
Moorehaven Mysteries #1
Moorehaven Bed and Breakfast Inn is situated in the seaside town of Seacrest. Once the home of mystery author Raymond Moore, whose stipulations in his will make for the fact that only writers are welcome to stay as guests. Pippa and her Uncle Hilt run the B&B and are proud of the fact that the house exudes the atmosphere of the time when Moore was alive. With many mystery writers as guests, it is no wonder that Pippa knows all about the methodology of murder and even instigates regular discussions about these topics. Even so, despite Seacrest harbouring the reputation of being murder-friendly (on paper, that is!) Pippa is scared when a boat breaks against the rocks but still, she rescues the unfortunate sailor … the handsome Lake. A stranger in their midst .. could this be asking for trouble?
Storyline
Lake’s head injury causes concern and it is decided that Pippa will take him to the B&B to rest. Pippa is intrigued by Lake but Uncle Hilt is very suspicious. When it turns out Lake’s boss (with him on the boat) was murdered it is only Pippa’s promise to watch Lake’s every move which prevents him from being taken into custody. We meet Pippa’s best friend Jordan and the new help Chloe and learn a bit about Pippa’s dark past that she successfully kept secret. Quite an accomplishment in such a small town! Seacrest’s gossip machine runs overtime with Pippa’s handsome stranger and the murder of one of their own. There is a reporter showing interest in Moorehaven’s history and the regular author-guests Al and Paul as well as Paul’s protégé Skylar regard it as a challenge to solve the murder, inventing all sorts of scenarios. It is believed that the late Raymond Moore’s ‘The Crimson Kiss’ is somehow part of the mystery. Meanwhile, Pippa bakes lots of delicious scones for her ‘killer-breakfasts’. The scones prove to be food for many a thought …
My Thoughts
Does it get any better? A lovely cosy murder mystery involving a mystery author retreat! The true-to-life characters, the ladies’ detective club and the typical town gossip and secrets combined with romance (an attractive stranger) and delicious scones in all varieties, what more do you need? The author has written a delightful book that has all the right ingredients and excitement I love. As an avid reader, I instantly fell in love with the premise of a B&B especially for (mystery) writers – what a novel idea! Pippa is a great protagonist, she has a past she wants to keep hidden and she is just one plucky girl! She is not only the owner of the B&B but personifies everything it stands for with her insights into the works of Raymond Moore and her knowledge about the author guests’ characters. This well-written detective novel has a steady pace and never falters or holds back. I loved this charming novel and look forward to the next in the series!
By the way, if you want to know more about the lemon-glazed blueberry scones or the maple oat hazelnut scones that prominently feature in this detective novel – the recipes are also included in the book!
