‘Dead Inside’ is Noelle Holten’s gritty, gripping, and captivating debut novel, not only introducing DC Maggie Jamieson but also featuring Probation Officers Lucy Sherwood and Sarah Hardy – and boy, what a dark and devious world we stumble upon!
Maggie Jamieson Crime Thriller #1
When three domestic abuse offenders are found beaten to death, DC Maggie Jamieson knows she is facing her toughest case yet.
The police suspect that Probation Officer Lucy Sherwood – who is connected to all three victims – is hiding a dark secret. Then a fourth domestic abuser is brutally murdered. And he is Lucy’s husband.
Now the finger of suspicion points at Lucy and the police are running out of time. Can Maggie and her team solve the murders before another person dies? And is Lucy really a cold-blooded killer?
Oh gosh! I have been dying to start reading DEAD INSIDE as Noelle is a fellow blogger I highly admire. First, I must say, I choked up when reading the dedication. We’ve all seen the many lovely and endearing photos of Buster and we were all devastated to see Noelle heartbroken when Buster was gone. I love the dedication.
The book is everything a detective thriller needs to be and to have. It’s got plenty of action, revenge, quite some violence, a plot that keeps you guessing, tormented police officers, and so much more. The Prologue makes you feel sick – domestic abuse is still happening and even the smartest of persons can fall prey to a charmer they have no idea the ‘I do” will be the start of a life of threats, violence, anxiousness, living in constant fear.
Lucy is a Probation Officer and she’s excellently portrayed – the author’s experience shines through here but what makes her character and what is happening so shocking is that she is a well-educated woman, with a good job, respected, in short, not someone you’d ever expect to be the victim of domestic abuse. I was torn, felt sympathetic but at the same time, wanted to shake her out of it. She, of all people, surely knows how abusers never stop, she’s facing enough of them on a daily base through her work!
There are so many interesting characters in this detective thriller, I’d love to mention more of them, like Shell Baker (!) and PC Mark Fielding, Lucy’s liaison at the police station, and doctor Kate Moloney, gosh, I love the author’s portrayal of her! As to Maggie Jamieson… she’s the perfect protagonist with her tormented mind, her tenacity to not let go until she’s got all the answers, she is prepared to go to the bottom of the case to find the culprit.
The story is fast-paced and engrossing, you could just sense the author’s research and experience shining throughout the words on the pages, which made it so authentic and an impressive read. I look forward to the next book in the Maggie Jamieson Crime Thriller series!
