A West County Crime Mystery #3

What can be more enjoyable than a bonfire on the beach? A few friends with you, watching the flames get higher and feeling the heat closeby… but sadly, instead of a pleasant event, it will become a crime scene when the murdered remains of a body are found, left in the ashes… Murder most foul!

Storyline

Unlike DCI Dan Hellier, we are witness to the abhorrent murder but we fail to see any motive. It seems there are five perpetrators with a girl, Tana, being the ringleader. Is the murdered body part of a ritual, a sacrifice? One of the five, Jay, feels utterly miserable but is in too much fear of Tana, who staged it all, to get away. He desperately wishes she would not continue with her gruesome plans and shudders to think there could be more victims, what is it Tana wants to achieve? Meanwhile, Dan Hellier has difficulty adapting to his new role as DCI as he would rather be out there with his team, investigating the murder, instead of having to ‘manage’ them from behind his desk. Soon he will have to decide how to organise the department but for now, his only goal is to find those, responsible for the, possibly cult-related, murder.

His DS, Sally Ellis, is struggling to keep her all too eager DC, Adam Foster, who tends to challenge her daily, under control and if that is not enough, she is reluctant to accept the task Dan assigns her… Not only his work is troubling Dan, his personal life too is about to change radically. Whilst Dan’s personal life is about to change radically, the implications of the devilish murder are finding its way into Exeter and beyond – Tana is cleverly manipulating social media and the pressure is rising, especially when they are unable to find the perpetrators or, for that matter, a motive for the killing. Somehow, a University Professor knows more but will he divulge the truth? With old sins casting long shadows and imminent danger at hand, the team have to race against the clock to prevent another ritual murder from happening.

My Thoughts

This third instalment in the West County Crime Mystery Series is just great! I love it! It becomes very personal for Dan Hellier in ‘Death on the Coast’ and I empathised with him experiencing what he is going through. He is forced to make decisions that might go wrong…. I could understand how he felt but well.. you can only juggle for so long! The story is thrilling and has an evil twist to come with it – there is manipulation but boy there is more! One moment saw a decision made that to me, felt a bit of a stretch – but I did not dwell too long on it as the characters and the story just drew me in and I wanted to find out how it all would go.  If you read the book you will understand exactly when I was gripped by devastation – which made me sad thinking how despicable and spiteful we humans can be…

‘Death on the Coast’ is an entertaining, enjoyable, evil and exciting detective thriller!

About the Author

BA Steadman Author Image

Bernie Steadman taught English for many years but only dabbled in short fiction and poetry until a few years ago when she took to writing full-time.  She completed her debut novel, Death in the Woods when she escaped the classroom and could finally stop marking essays. This was the first in the West Country Mysteries series featuring DI Dan Hellier and his Exeter-based team. There are now three in the series, Death on Dartmoor and Death on the Coast completing the series.

Bernie lives in a small village in East Devon and her novels are set in and around the ancient Roman city of Exeter, which has seen its fair share of murder and mayhem over the centuries. The books explore the beauty of the area but demonstrate that even in the most charming of settings, terrible events may occur.

When not glued to the laptop, Bernie is a keen yoga fan and enjoys walking and cycling in the Devon countryside with her husband. They share their home with two large, black cats which came from the animal sanctuary where she is a volunteer and trustee.
