No Remorse is the third instalment in the engrossing Kent Fisher Mysteries series and I love it! Our Environmental Health Officer has trouble focussing as his beloved Gemma is now engaged to Richard and a secret unravels abhorrent actions from the past, exposing not only Kent but those dear to him, to dangerous situations….
An old man in Nightingales, a home for the elderly tells Kent ‘they’ want to kill him because ‘they’ know who he is – but they will never know his secret. Before Kent can ask any further, he is whisked away by the stern manager, Miss Rudolf, who has no time for nonsense and whilst Kent’s brain is working overtime to process Mr Trimble’s remarks, she dismisses everything saying Trimble “drifts in and out.” Added to that, she is fully aware of Kent’s detective job on the side of his daytime one, being an Environmental Health Inspector. At least, that is how she refers to the events from the past (No Accident and No Bodies, the first two volumes in the Kent Fisher Mysteries series).
Back with his car, Kent notices a sheet of paper, “You think you’re so clever, don’t you?”
It seems the next mystery is already loudly knocking on Kent’s door…
Following the recent past (No Bodies, Kent Fisher #2), Kent is now the happy owner of both the stately country estate ‘Belmont’ as ‘Meadow Farm’ and frankly, he cannot wait for his stepmother, Niamh, to move into ‘Belmont’ in order for him to have his apartment all to himself again. Well, to himself and Columbo, his dog, of course. There is a shadow to his luck, the lovely Gemma, his assistant and the subject of his love, is engaged to another man, Richard. To make matters worse, Kent has to attend the engagement party and to top it all off, Richard publicly asks Kent to be his best man. Meanwhile at work, the problems are piling up and Kent is the one stuck between a rock and a hard place when he has to speak on behalf of the management on the subject of the upcoming merger with the Pollution Team.
Trimble’s remarks keep nagging Kent and, seeing as ‘Nightingales’ receptionist, Louise, might be falling for his charms, he has found the perfect accomplice to research it further without having to go through the stately Miss Rudolf. But as it happens, Kent will never get a chance to speak to Mr Trimble again. His death arouses suspicions in Kent’s mind and it was all he needed to sink his teeth into solving the mystery of Mr Trimble’s secret and the whereabouts of the mysteriously disappeared laptop. As it turns out, Richard, Gemma’s fiancee, has useful inside knowledge and, although Gemma expressly forbids Kent to do so, he contacts Richard. He just has to know the story behind Trimble’s secret. His investigation causes quite a havoc and brings not only Kent in lethal danger but also those who are dear to him…
This third book in the Kent Fisher Mysteries series is wonderful! I loved it! Even if it gave me such a hard time composing my review as there are so many things happening and yet, so little to be said about it to not spoil your pleasure in reading ‘No Remorse’! The turmoil in Kent’s head is about to explode as he walks the scary path towards a (proper?) relationship and whether he is able to definitely put his love for Gemma at rest, is for you to find out! In ‘No Remorse’ the author gives us so much insight into Kent, his past, his thoughts and feelings and his attitude towards almost everything.
I loved the author’s play with humour and sarcasm relating to his protagonist’s thoughts. There are quite a few plotlines that the author cunningly weaves together while mixing lighter topics with harrowing and gruesome ones and to top it off, there are shocking and dangerous situations… To me, the Kent Fisher series keeps getting better by the book, I love it! The characters, the plot, the relationship(s), the many events taking place… No Remorse has wet my appetite for the next book in the series: No Smoke!
About the Author
Inspired by Miss Marple, Inspector Morse and Columbo, Robert Crouch wanted to write entertaining crime fiction the whole family could enjoy.
At their heart is Kent Fisher, an environmental health officer with more baggage than an airport carousel. Passionate about the environment, justice and fair play, he’s soon embroiled in murder.
Drawing on his experiences as an environmental health officer, Robert has created a new kind of detective who brings a unique and fresh twist to the traditional murder mystery. With complex plots, topical issues and a liberal dash of irreverent humour, the Kent Fisher mysteries offer an alternative to the standard police procedural.
Robert now writes full time and lives on the South Coast of England with his wife and their West Highland White Terrier, Harvey, who appears in the novels as Kent’s sidekick, Columbo.
