Poet of the Wrong Generation – Lonnie Ostrow

Poet of the Wrong Generation - Lonnie Ostrow

From the passion of deep-felt first love for Megan grows a bittersweet love song – and so begins a tumultuous career as singer/songwriter for Johnny Elias

| Introduction |

Central Park, New York, August 15, 1991. One couple meet for the first time, another couple experience their last happy days together.  There is a photograph taken of the four happy friends together, including Johnny Elias and his girlfriend Megan. Johnny was brought up by foster parents whilst Katherine, Megan’s rich and powerful mother, raised her child in luxury. No wonder Katherine fiercely opposes this love affair and even accuses Johnny of gold digging. She has no problem making life as tough as it can be for Johnny and deception is one of her prime abilities. Grief-stricken Johnny writes down his feelings on paper, a poetic text is born and the first steps on the rocky path to stardom are set.

| Storyline |

That hot August day represented everything: the end of college, the “fleeting moment when life seemed full of endless possibilities.” It should have marked the start of their life together, bound by a deep-felt love. Instead and unbeknownst to both, it is their last happy day as a couple. Andy meets his Jacqui and Johnny and Megan .. they have been together almost three years now and for both, it is their first true love. But always Katherine looms in the shadows. She wants more for her daughter, more than Johnny will ever be able to give her. Johnny is so caught up in the moment that he sings along enthusiastically even though he laughs off the praise of others who recognise his singing talent. However, he is aware of his talent to create poems and transform his feelings into words, song lyrics, like with the 1991 New York riots (the ‘Crown Heights rant’). This talent is about to change Johnny’s life forever.

Unable to withstand the pressure from Katherine, Megan decides to take a break from Johnny and lure her mother into a false sense of security. Johnny is devastated and hits rock bottom, but out of the depth of his misery, the most beautiful love song is created, a “primitive ballad packed with raw emotions.” A chance meeting with former musician and now music teacher-to-be Howard brings Johnny on the path to become a rock star – his lyrics are simply awesome and whenever a situation arises, he finds the right words helping him and others through difficult situations. But Johnny’s troubles are far from being over. There are forces out there trying to squash Johnny as he climbs the ladder of fame, despite his best friend Andy being on his side. With stardom comes vulnerability and life can be cruel, as Johnny is about to find out …

| My Thoughts |

Firstly, I want to say I absolutely LOVE the title. It is nostalgic, sentimental and touching. Awesome. The novel is very descriptive, entertaining and easy-going, the characters easy to identify with. You have to feel for Megan and yet, you wish she found the strength … The storyline is somewhat predictable and I would have liked it if the author had given Johnny more ‘body’ with regards to his demeanour and habits during his years of fame; it felt if Johnny acted badly, it was easily excused whereas it could have made Johnny a more rounded character in my eyes. But to be fair, this hardly detracts from the plotline and the book’s exciting climax. I delight in the insertion of the poems between the chapters and was impressed by the author’s creativity and talent to weave the prose of his storyline with such awe-inspiring and powerful lyrics.

Speaking of the lyrics and the songs .. did you know that the song compositions are REAL songs?! The lyrics are written by the author, Lonnie Ostrow, the songs are performed by the talented recording artist, Michael Nadata.
