The Effortless Mind – Will Williams

Mindfulness gets a whole new meaning in Will Williams’s book ‘The Effortless Mind’ – intriguing, interesting, inspirational. A new approach to meditation.

Introduction

Daily life can feel like a fast-paced treadmill, leaving little time to unwind, recharge and do what brings us joy. Meditation is a powerful way to hit the pause button, increase your energy and start to enjoy life more.

A bulletproof technique to help you relax and unleash your best self

– Emine Rushton, Psychologies

Meditating with Will gave me new ideas for songs and books

– Howard Donald, Take That

The Effortless Mind is renowned meditation teacher Will Williams’s must-have guide for modern-day meditators. Suffering from chronic stress and insomnia, Will undertook years of research and training with leading experts from around the world, which led him to find the cure he was looking for in Vedic meditation.

In The Effortless Mind, Will explains how his Vedic-inspired method of meditation has transformed the lives of his students – all of whom are busy people of all ages and all backgrounds. Their inspiring stories and the scientific research into meditation show the profound physical, mental and emotional benefits you can gain from such a simple daily practice, including more energy, better sleep, greater clarity, less anxiety and a happier outlook on life.

My Thoughts

I do believe in (the power of) meditation – still need to initiate those first steps towards meditating though (!) – but improving your mindset – towards an effortless one – sounds like those adverts for dieting, you know, eat the same and get slimmer anyway.

In this state of mind, the first chapters only seemed to confirm what I feared. No real new insights but glowing stories of skeptics-turned-fans, no techniques or exercises, for that the author frequently refers you to his website and courses.

Would this book be all about selling the author’s courses and training? Well… yes and no. With each chapter, Will takes the reader into a different aspect of the influence of an ‘effortless mind’ on body, brain, and mind. They aren’t new as such but the author describes them well and it gives you lots of food for thought.

‘Another reason why meditation is so brilliant: it gives us the capability not to react to other people when they are being ruled by their sympathetic nervous system. We see the Hyde character but can recognise that Dr Jekyll is somewhere beneath the surface, just waiting for the opportunity to emerge.’

– Will Williams, in ‘The Effortless Mind’

In the end, many of the author’s words and reasoning rang home with me – even if, like I said before, some were already known, still, Will manages to describe them in such a way that you can perfectly follow his arguments and train of thoughts – it is an entertaining read as well and I found myself drawn into the chapters.

Will stresses the importance of having your own sound – like a mantra, what you need to start meditating. How to find your own sound, is, you can guess, not part of this book nor the techniques that, according to Will, are different from any other form of meditation.

We learn how the Vedic-inspired Beeja meditation has the ability to cure diseases and one’s state of mind – to help reduce stress and anxiety and make life, overall, better – the examples show people who are more fully alive and enjoy life more than ever before. What we do not learn is, apart from the odd exercise, how to practice Beeja meditation – the glowing celebrity reviews do not relate to the contents of the book but stress the huge benefits of Beeja meditation.

‘The Beeja meditation will deliver much enhanced present-moment awareness – and the beauty of it is, that it enables your brain to relax into a coherent state rather than focus into one. This elicits more wide-ranging coherence within the brain and the nervous system.’

– Will Williams, in ‘The Effortless Mind’

‘The Effortless Mind’ is excellently researched and well-written, accessible to all and provides us with insight into the benefits to both body and mind of Beeja meditation. You can tell the author knows what he is talking about, has experienced it himself. However, if you want to learn more about the techniques used and would welcome a few more exercises, you will have to visit the author’s website and enroll in his courses.

What to me would enhance the reading experience and the insights from the book is, is something about the techniques, perhaps a little exercise at the beginning of each chapter instead of the odd one occasionally. That would add to the mentioned benefits and would give the reader a few pointers to start with after which they will perhaps be even more ready to sign up for one of Will’s classes.

Having said that, I found myself more and more engrossed in this book with each following chapter. Not because of the many examples and stories of those, whose lives changed for the better due to Beeja meditation, but because of Will’s capability of showing you how everything is linked – body, mind, brain – and the remarkable effects of meditation on all parts of your being, your life.

‘The personalised sounds allow the brain to truly switch off, reboot and top up with energy – it takes you to such a deep part of yourself that all of you is nourished by it – bringing about heartfulness, soulfulness, mindfulness, and wholeness.’

– Will Williams, in ‘The Effortless Mind’

NOTE: For those who feel affronted by the things I mentioned above, please beware to not mistake my book review for my view on Beeja meditation. I was very impressed by the changes Will Williams went through – his dedication to and respect for the ancient traditions are laudable and inspirational. And I am in awe that the Dalai Lama, a man I hugely admire, invited Will to go on a pilgrimage with him – that says all you need to know about Will Williams’ motivation, integrity, and authenticity. From all we can see and hear, his Beeja meditation helps improve people’s lives. That matters.
